Practical Gardening Skills

This gardening course is designed for adults eager to enhance their gardening techniques. Participants will develop confidence and proficiency in a variety of gardening skills and successful completion will earn you a City and Guilds Level 1 Award in Practical Horticulture Skills.

You will gain essential skills in ground preparation for sowing and planting, weed identification and management, shrub pruning for better plant health, and effective grass and turf care. The course also covers plant identification, as well as exploring different soil types and methods for their improvement.

Practical sessions will take place at St Mary’s Churchyard in Walthamstow Village. Ensure you bring suitable clothing, gardening gloves, and a notebook and pen to make the most of your learning experience. Under the guidance of Head Gardener Tim Hewitt, who transitioned from a nearly 20-year career in teaching English to becoming a professional gardener after studying at Capel Manor, this vibrant space has gained national recognition from the Royal Horticultural Society.

Whether you have an allotment, a garden, a balcony or just some indoor space that you want to brighten up with plants. These courses are aimed at getting you on track to gardening glory and harvesting heaven. Theses courses will have an emphasis on edible plants, but will touch a little upon ornamental and houseplants plants too.
